Why didn't my PDF get much smaller?
Compression targets embedded images. A PDF that's mostly text is already small, and images stored as Flate/CCITT (common in some scans) aren't recompressed. The biggest wins are on photo- and JPEG-heavy documents.
Does compression affect text and readability?
Text stays selectable and sharp — only embedded images are recompressed. On Balanced or Best quality, pages typically look identical on screen.
Which quality level should I choose?
Balanced is the right default. Choose Smallest size when you're fighting a hard upload limit, and Best quality when the PDF will be printed or zoomed.
Is it safe to compress confidential documents here?
Yes. Unlike server-side compressors, the file is processed in your browser — it never leaves your device, so contracts, statements and IDs stay private.
Is Compress PDF free to use?
Yes. Compress PDF is completely free on GenRise, with no limits, watermarks, or hidden paywalls.
Do I need to create an account or sign up?
