Frequently asked questions

Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot or saved image?

Yes. Switch to "Scan an image" and drop in a screenshot, a downloaded picture, or a photo of a printed code. This is the usual way to read a QR code that is already on the same screen you would otherwise point a camera at.

Does this work on a desktop or laptop?

Yes. Use any connected webcam for live scanning, or decode an image file — no phone, app, or browser extension needed.

Are my camera frames or images uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding happens entirely in your browser, using the built-in BarcodeDetector API where the browser supports it and a bundled JavaScript decoder otherwise. Nothing you scan is sent to a server or stored.

Why won't my camera start?

Camera access needs your permission and a secure (HTTPS) connection. If you dismissed the prompt, re-enable camera access for this site in your browser settings. You can always fall back to scanning a saved image instead.

Is it safe to open a link from a QR code?

Check it first. QR phishing ("quishing") hides malicious links behind a pattern you cannot read. This scanner shows the full decoded URL before you open anything, so you can confirm the domain is what you expect — especially on codes stuck to parking meters, invoices, or public posters.

The code isn't being recognised — what can I do?

Fill more of the frame with the code, hold steady so the camera can focus, and avoid glare or steep angles. For image scans, crop close to the code and use the sharpest version you have; very low-resolution or partially covered codes may not carry enough data to decode.

Can I create QR codes here too?

Yes — the GenRise QR Code Generator makes free static QR codes for links, text, Wi-Fi and contact cards, with PNG and SVG download and no expiry.

Is QR Code Scanner free to use?

Yes. QR Code Scanner is completely free on GenRise, with no limits, watermarks, or hidden paywalls.

Do I need to create an account or sign up?

No. Every GenRise tool works instantly in your browser — no account, email, or sign-up required.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. QR Code Scanner runs entirely on-device using your browser, so your files are never uploaded or stored anywhere. All processing happens locally.

How does QR Code Scanner work?

QR Code Scanner uses your browser's built-in capabilities — Canvas, WebAssembly, and File APIs — to process files locally. Scan a QR code with your camera or from an image, and read what it contains. Simply open the tool, select your file, and the result is generated instantly on your device.

Is QR Code Scanner safe and private?

Yes. Since QR Code Scanner processes everything in your browser, your files never leave your device. There is no server-side storage, no tracking of file contents, and no data collection.

Can I use QR Code Scanner on mobile?

Yes. QR Code Scanner works on any modern browser, including mobile devices. It is fully responsive and optimized for both desktop and mobile use.

About QR Code Scanner

The GenRise QR Code Scanner reads QR codes two ways: live through your device camera, or from an image you already have — a screenshot, a saved photo, or a picture of a poster. It decodes the payload and, where it recognises the format, breaks it into readable fields: the SSID and password behind a Wi-Fi code, the name and phone number in a contact card, the recipient and subject of an email code. Scanning happens entirely on your device using the browser's BarcodeDetector where available and a bundled WebAssembly-free decoder everywhere else, so images and camera frames are never uploaded. It is also a quick safety check: you can read the destination of a QR code before deciding whether to open it.
